Johnny Folsom 4

When: Fri., July 6, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $6-8

Given that the Lincoln Theatre's present calendar includes tribute bands for the likes of Motley Crue, Journey, Guns N' Roses, Ratt, and "Yacht Rock," a Johnny Cash band seems refreshing by comparison. Granted that the bar still remains pretty low; while it's reasonable for others to carry on his legacy now that the Man in Black is gone, such endeavors tend to be more valuable when they involve interpretation rather than imitation. The Johnny Folsom 4's approach is pretty standard paint-by-numbers, though leader David Burney does a respectable deep-voiced Cash rumble. Eleanor Jones is less convincing as June Carter Cash, but the band should get a boost on this night from cameo turns by a trio of top-shelf local pickers: Steve Howell, Joe Newberry and Jon Shain. Openers Molly Sue Gonzalez & the Mean Mean Men, from Nashville, also are imitators, but with a slightly wider scope covering the likes of Wanda Jackson, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins in their rockabilly-grounded repertoire. Tickets to the 9 p.m. show are $6 in advance, $8 day of show; visit —Peter Blackstock
