John Warner with Rosecrans Baldwin

When: Thu., Oct. 6, 7 p.m. 2011

McSweeney's is one of those great mixed-bag anthologies. Its relentlessly innovative sense of design and presentation is the best in the business, with such creations as an old-school muckraking newspaper and a head-shaped box filled with different chapbooks. Conversely, it occasionally loves dry, ironic humor and satire a bit too much, giving it a snobbish, hipster vibe (also, the varying formats makes it darn hard to keep on a bookshelf). But whatever you think of the rag, there's no questioning the talent behind it—which makes it worth checking out this appearance by John Warner, managing editor of McSweeney's Internet Tendency, to promote his first novel, The Funny Man. It's the dark and, yes, satirical tale of an aspiring stand-up comedian who finds fame and fortune ... only after he starts performing with his fist in his mouth. In fairness, I can speak from middle-school experience that this works. Things go very, very wrong from there. To find out how, check out Warner's 7 p.m. reading and signing, which also features local author Rosecrans Baldwin reading from his upcoming travelogue. —Zack Smith
