John Prine

When: Fri., May 7, 7 p.m. 2010
Price: $40-60

It's fitting for me that this John Prine appearance takes place a few days before Mother's Day: My mom, who just turned 74, is a huge fan, and I'm the one who got her hooked. It started with "Grandpa Was a Carpenter," the perfect gateway Prine song, placed strategically in the center of a homemade roots and country mix. Prine's catalog was cherry-picked for "Please Don't Bury Me," "It's a Big Old Goofy World" and two versions of "Angel From Montgomery"—his 1971 original and a live duet with Bonnie Raitt. I shied away from his edgier fare, so no "Sam Stone" despite its stone-classic status. Even before the gift of In Spite of Ourselves—with its charming, lived-in verse-swap of a title track co-starring Iris Dement poised to become a favorite—reached the mailbox, I'd rendered a convert. Seeing a Prine show together remains a goal, but a 550-mile gap will foil attainment yet again. Openers Old Crow Medicine Show are probably a bit too rambunctious for Mom, anyway. —Rick Cornell
