John Maus, Gary War

When: Fri., Feb. 9, 9 p.m. 2018
Price: $13-$15
The California Institute of the Arts has nurtured a number of generational talents—John Lasseter, Tim Burton, John Maus? Though he hasn’t directed a blockbuster children’s film yet, Maus’s postgrad career as a solo musician has garnered a fan base arguably as obsessive and cultish as that of his fellow alumni. Absurd and claustrophobic and exquisitely crafted, his records can work on several levels: as forward-thinking surrealist synthpop, as throwback new wave kitsch, as pop commentary. The sprawling interviews that usually accompany his album releases are often just as compelling and confounding, touching on obscure composition theory, political praxis, and Maus’ idiosyncratic musings on life. —David Ford Smith
