John Howie Jr & the Sweethearts

When: Sat., July 30, 5-8 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

You could call the Sweethearts John Howie's light band, reflecting the trio's pared-down lineup and more minimalist approach (compared to his more amped-up crew the Rosewood Bluff). With the Sweethearts, Howie's grainy baritone vocals are accompanied by his acoustic guitar, bassist Billie Feather and (usually) pedal steel player extraordinaire Nathan Golub. They fashion a moodier, more intimate country swing fueled by an abiding affection for George Jones and tears-in-your-beer balladry. The free show on the hill overlooking the Saxapahaw Farmer's Market starts at 6 p.m.; tip the band when the swan bucket gets passed around. —Chris Parker
