John Cowan Trio

When: Wed., Feb. 27, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $13-21

Best known as the longtime lead vocalist and bassist for progressive bluegrass pioneers New Grass Revival, John Cowan brings a similarly open-minded approach to his own ventures. It's not uncommon for a single performance to include covers of Led Zeppelin, Frank Sinatra, Merle Travis, Sam Cooke and Charlie Parker. Those fit with Cowan's originals, which combine elements of bluegrass, rock, soul, folk and gospel in inventive fashion. He appears here between dates playing bass with the Doobie Brothers, which is now his primary gig; he's joined by his longtime running mates, Shad Cobb on fiddle and Jeff Autry on guitar. —Spencer Griffith
