John Brown's Body, Jonathan Scales Fourchestra

When: Fri., April 29, 9 p.m. 2016
Price: $12-$15
A veteran presence on the American reggae circuit, John Brown’s Body has been pushing the basics of island music in new directions for more than two decades. Often sidestepping the traditional themes of weed, war, and religion, the New York-based outfit doses its dense arrangements with rapped rhymes and futuristic electronics as much as with dancehall toasting and dub. The avant-garde instrumentals of Asheville’s Jonathan Scales showcase his virtuosic steel pan chops with Caribbean influences, jazz, and funk. —Spencer Griffith
