Rated R

David Gordon Green's heavy Southern drama stars Nic Cage as a decent but damaged ex-con trying to save a 15-year-old (Tye Sheridan) from a similar fate. With both professionals and non-actors, the film has the hard grit of Winter's Bone and Beasts of the Southern Wild. Aside from a villain who's a bit too relentlessly villainous, the story rings with grim authenticity.
