Joanne Dewitt

When: Wed., Aug. 17, 7 p.m. 2011

When I was in preschool, my dad would drive me past Central Prison off Hillsborough Street every morning on our way to Project Enlightenment downtown. "Glad I'm not in that place," we'd say in unison. Local teacher and author Joanne Dewitt has accumulated the writings of those who did end up in a place like that—the federal prison in Butner—with the collection Inside the Walls of Butner Prison. The inmate writings, which include everything from creative exercises to philosophical essays to personal musings, help readers gain some insight into daily life in the American penal system. Dewitt reads from and signs copies of the book at 7 p.m. —Zack Smith
