Re: “Textural percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani expands the role of his instrument

I had the honor of performing with Tatsuya last night in Gainesville, Florida at Action Research 56 with Hal McGee, Andrew Chadwick (Ironing), and as myself, John David Eriksen. He played an amazing solo set first and then graced us with the opportunity of performing in a four-person improvisational ensemble. I could not sleep well after seeing him perform. I purchased two CDs and have been listening to them all morning.

I asked him about his bows: he makes them himself and they are designed specifically for bowing metal percussion. They use nylon instead of the traditional horsehair of classical stringed instruments because it is much more durable.

Please, if you hear that he is coming to your town, make the effort to go and see him perform.

Information about the performance here: http://actionresearchfl.blogspot.com/2010/…
