JJ Grey & Mofro, The Dirty Guv'nahs

When: Sat., Oct. 12, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $17.50-20
JJ Grey and his band of local pals have been making music for well over a decade, having worked through obstacles including car crashes and lineup changes. The northern Florida native also makes music that pledges allegiance to his region. His music is a mix of swampy funk, sweet-toothed soul and flinty rock speaking of the Muscle Shoals of Alabama, the Skynyrds of Jacksonville and the sweat-inducing syncopation of New Orleans. His latest with Mofro, This River, continues his humid exploration of American roots, but he gets bogged down in the clichés and gimmicks of his predecessors. —Chris Parker
