Jimmy Thackery, Tad Walters, Bullfrog Willard McGhee

When: Sun., April 3, 9 p.m. 2011

If you love blues, you already know Jimmy Thackery. Lead guitarist for blues road dogs the Nighthawks, Thackery cut the c(h)ord a quarter-century ago after a 14-year stint, and has been running wild ever since. His solos are hurricanes on rails, furious storms with hairpin turns, stunt-driver spinouts with a powerful melodicism reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan. His rhythm section is smooth and welcoming as velvet. Thackery's raspy (and thankfully infrequent) vocals hardly hold a candle to his playing, but you wouldn't complain that Houdini can't do card tricks. I'm not convinced there's better honky-tonk guitarist on the circuit today. Tad Walters and Bullfrog Willard McGhee open. —Chris Parker
