Jimmy LaFave

When: Wed., July 28, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $15

Jimmy LaFave spent his first 17 years in Texas before his family moved to Oklahoma, and he's called Austin home since 1986. But his strong association with the Sooner State, its "red dirt music" scene and its favorite musical son, Woody Guthrie, make that Texas connection easy to forget. And because he excels at wrapping his exquisite pipes around other folks' songs—check out his take on Oklahoma-born Jimmy Webb's "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" and any number of Dylan covers—it's also easy to forget that LaFave's a gifted songwriter in his own right. You'll get a reminder tonight. —Rick Cornell
