Jimbo Mathus, Fantastico! (Back Room)

When: Fri., April 25, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $8

Since forsaking his Squirrel Nut Zip, his own Knockdown Society and even his root-boy alter ego with the Memphis String Band, Jimbo Mathus has entwined himself deeply in his Deep South heritage. He released an album to benefit Charlie Patton's daughter Rosetta, who helped raise him, and collaborated with Buddy Guy for two records. His latest with the Tri-State Coalition, Dark Night Of The Soul, sounds like Exile-era Stones overlaid with a drawl raspier than Jagger's. Mathus' journey from jug-band hokum to juke-joint electric blues and to what he now calls "white country" drags along the ghosts of Patton, Junior Kimbrough and T-Model Ford, as he's a Mississippi boy still wrestling with his region's past. Fantastico! opens. —Grant Britt
