Jim Avett, Reed Mahoney

When: Wed., March 2, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $6

For more than 30 years, Jim Avett—yes, Scott and Seth's father—put aside any serious musical ambitions. Instead, he built bridges, literally, across the eastern United States to support his family. Avett bridged musical generations, too: Absorbing gospel songs from his music-schooled mother, he also learned country tunes at picking circles and briefly formed a folk duo in the early '70s. After passing along those roots influences to his now-famous progeny, the elder Avett found time to return to his musical career, releasing both a family gospel album and a disc of kind-hearted folk originals within the past few years. Reed Mahoney opens. —Spencer Griffith
