JESSICA HOPPER

FLYLEAF BOOKS, CHAPEL HILL

TUESDAY, MAY 12

You can't get much clearer than the title of Jessica Hopper's new book, The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic. But more than just a description, the title is an indictment of the currents of sexism that still run strong through music journalism—and music. The former is still dominated by male writers, while female musicians still struggle for respect in the latter. Hopper regularly attacks these issues with a sharp finesse—in the past, for the likes of Rolling Stone and The Village Voice, and now as a senior editor at Pitchfork. This collection spans 20 years of Hopper's writings on the early days of the riot grrrl movement, R. Kelly's myriad complex problems, women's place (or lack thereof) in emo and much more. Here's hoping that though Hopper's book is the first, it's far from the last. 7 p.m., free, 752 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill, 919-942-7373,
