Jeremy Hawkins: The Last Days of Video

When: Thu., April 9, 7 p.m. 2015

THE REGULATOR BOOKSHOP—Even those of us born in the '90s can remember when, to see a movie outside of a theater, you had to sit in the back of your dad's pick-up at the drive-in or make the journey to the local video rental store. Of course, the movies weren't the only incentive for such excursions—don't forget the Airheads and the Orville Redenbacher Pop Up Bowl. But the recession of 2007 sent those declining days whirling into near-extinction. Among those living in the "last days" is Waring Wax, the main character of local fiction writer Jeremy Hawkins' debut novel. Wax, a not-so-nice drunk, runs a video store in a small college town. When a brand-new Blockbuster Video opens nearby, Wax and his two employees, sexy Alaura and man-child Jeff, fight for their turf with lackluster schemes. Hawkins, who is now a bookseller at Flyleaf Books, used to work at the dearly departed local chain VisArt Video, which you will likely recognize in his fictional Star Video. 7 p.m., free, 720 9th St., Durham, 919-286-2700, Montgomery
