Re: “First, the dog, then the pony

On May 22, 2008 at an Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on the recent proliferation of BSL-3 and BSL-4 labs, Chair Rep. John Dingell called Homeland Security "secretive, arrogant, and incompetent." Those of us who have followed this issue closely have certainly found that description accurate, not only of DHS but of the NC Consortium for NBAF as well! This group of academics, business and industry have repeated the message given them by DHS time after time to the media and government, other academics, business and industry. Forgotten in the show were the ones who would have this huge facility as a neighbor; we were never fetted with dinner and slide presentations, never privately assured of its prestigue, safety and the economic benefits to the state. When citizens learned of this project and became concerned, the consortium responded with all the same stale responses: safe, secure, an economic boom, and an enormous feather in our cap. They discounted us as stupid, uninformed and mistaken, and in the process became as arrogant, incompetent and secretive as the agency they took their cues from.
