Jeff Austin Band, Hank Smith & Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw

When: Fri., Sept. 18, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $14.50-$18
Nearly 18 months ago, Jeff Austin left Yonder Mountain String Band, the Colorado jamgrass outfit he co-founded almost two decades ago. The singer and mandolin player has since released his solo debut on Yep Roc and formed a backing band featuring longtime collaborators Eric Thorin and Ross Martin, along with banjo virtuoso and N.C. native Ryan Cavanaugh. Despite The Simple Truth’s genre-hopping ambitions, the quartet’s considerable instrumental chops are necessary to prop up an uneven—and often uninteresting—album. The duo of Hank Smith & Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw—bandmates in locals Kickin Grass and The Morning After—opens. —Spencer Griffith
