Jedi Mind Tricks, Dow Jones, Skyblew

When: Fri., April 16, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $16-$18

Jedi Mind Tricks inhabit a hard-bitten world colored with heartbreak and studded with flashes of beauty. Soul samples compete with creeping horror movie synth, and Vinnie Paz flows indomitably like the Mississippi to the Gulf. The rhymes are limber and lyrically tight, gilded with pop-culture references and emotional violence. Paz reunited with one-time partner Jus Allah on 2008's A History of Violence for the first time since their 2000 breakthrough, Violent by Design, though Paz remains the show's star. His skillful mix of the profane and profound drives the group, illustrating the world's grievous battle between violence and compassion. Dow Jones and Skyblew open. —Chris Parker
