Jean Kwok

When: Mon., May 3, 7:30 p.m. 2010

Jean Kwok's first novel, Girl in Translation, has already earned comparisons to such coming-of-age classics as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Reflecting elements of Kwok's own childhood, it's the tale of 11-year-old Kimberly Chang, who immigrates with her mother from Hong Kong to New York, only to find herself stuck in a life of backbreaking labor in a Chinatown sweatshop. Determined to use her intelligence to escape her poverty, Kimberly is challenged by both the difficulties of her life and her love for a less-ambitious boy in the sweatshop. Kwok will read from her book and sign copies. —Zack Smith
