Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

When: Sun., Feb. 10, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $89+

What with multiple Grammys, gold records, a Pulitzer Prize and a collaboration with Sting, Wynton Marsalis has surpassed almost all of the jazzmen who are his heroes. Now 51, Marsalis is on the young side for an elder statesman, but the classically trained New Orleans trumpeter and composer has risen steadily to that position since he appeared as a professorial talking head in the Ken Burns documentary Jazz. As artistic director of the nonprofit Jazz at Lincoln Center, Marsalis presides over its 15-member in-house orchestra. Known as JALCO, the group performs works by the likes of Coltrane, Monk, Goodman and Gillespie, often in concert with world-class orchestras and guest conductors. In the process, the jazz canon remains alive and vital, rather than preserved in amber. Tickets start at $89 for the 7:30 p.m show. —David Klein
