Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

When: Thu., March 15, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $79-139

The second-eldest son among the famed musical siblings fathered by jazz pianist and teacher Ellis Marsalis, New Orleans native Wynton joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers on trumpet as a teenager. That was just the beginning of an illustrious career: Marsalis also played with legends including Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock on his way to composing a Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio and receiving Grammys in classical, jazz and even spoken-word categories. On this night, Marsalis leads the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, a 15-piece ensemble that's been under his direction since its inception in 1987, touring the nation when not in its New York residence. —Spencer Griffith
