Jay Leutze

When: Mon., Aug. 19, 7 p.m. 2013

In this true David vs. Goliath story, the Goliath is a mining company determined to destroy North Carolina's Belview Mountain, and the Davids are the Cook family, who live underneath it. Suspecting that the company is violating the state's mining law, they contact nonpracticing attorney Jay Leutze, who also happens to be into fishing and nature. They form "The Dog Town Bunch" who find themselves engaged in court battles, surveillance and pressure on public officials as they witness some questionable tactics by the mining company. The tale is chronicled in Leutze's Stand Up That Mountain:The Battle to Save One Small Community in the Wilderness Along the Appalachian Trail. (Whew!) He'll be reading from it and signing copies at this appearance. —Zack Smith
