Jason Rubell Collection

When: Thu., Aug. 23, 5 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

When I was a teenager, I collected fortune cookie fortunes. Jason Rubell collected formative work by Cindy Sherman, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Sol Lewitt, Gerhard Richter and Jeff Koons. Rubell's collection, which features a murderer's row of late-20th-century star artists, made its debut at the old Duke University Museum of Art in 1991 as his graduation project. Since then, it has toured to 10 other university art museums. The Nasher brings it back to Durham as Time Capsule, Age 13 to 21: The Contemporary Art Collection of Jason Rubell, kicking off another national tour. The free event runs 5–9 p.m.; bring the kids for hands-on crafts courtesy of the Scrap Exchange, and bring an appetite as chef Tim Lyons of Blu Seafood and Bar takes over the museum restaurant's kitchen for the evening (reservations strongly recommended). —Chris Vitiello
