Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Jesse Sykes & Phil Wandscher

When: Fri., Oct. 29, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $15-17

Former Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell has been riding solo for over three years, but he's yet to hit cruising speed. While Isbell was responsible for a half-dozen or so of the Truckers' best cuts during his tenure with the Southern rock kingpins, his uneven output since the split—which favors swampy roots pop over a classic rock roar—has been spotty. Still, Isbell's got an uncanny way of telling a story; when his soulful rasp is matched with a muscular arrangement, he gives plenty of reason to listen. Joined by original Whiskeytown guitarist and longtime musical partner Phil Wandscher, Seattle's Jesse Sykes offers delicate, disconsolate indie folk in the opening spot at 8 p.m. —Spencer Griffith
