If country music is the new arena rock, then no one does it better—or worse, depending on your affinity for screaming guitar solos and anthemic choruses—than Jason Aldean. The singer kick-started the modern revival of country-rock by layering rural themes over tough beats, as seen on early singles “Hicktown” and “She’s Country.” Beneath the misplaced bluster (“1994,” an odd ode to Joe “Ditty” Diffie) and cringe-worthy sexuality (try singing along to “Jammin’ to some old Alabama with you, baby/Laying right here naked in my bed” without giggling), Aldean has an excellent ear for songs. He counters his harder side with gems from Nashville songwriting treasures Ashley Monroe, David Lee Murphy and John Rich. —Karlie Justus Marlowe
