Japanese Culture Day

When: Sat., Nov. 3, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 2012

As the holiday season approaches on the United States calendar, UNC's Ackland Art Museum celebrates a Japanese national holiday for which Americans don't have an equivalent. Bunka no Hi (Culture Day) is a celebration of the arts throughout Japan, and the Ackland offers a day packed with free, all-ages events as part of its ambitious "Season of Japan" series of exhibitions showing off the museum's collections of Japanese prints, ceramics, posters, films, screens and scrolls.

Check out displays by the Triangle Bonsai Society and the Triangle Origami Folders United. There's an origami station to try your hand at folding, and gallery scavenger hunts as well. Tuck a notebook in your pocket for the N.C. Haiku Society's haiku workshop (11 a.m.) and reading (1:30 p.m.). Create screen-printed take-home work with Art Adventures for kids (1 p.m., ages 6–9). Events are scheduled 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; all are free, but some occur at specific times and require an RSVP. Visit ackland.org. —Chris Vitiello
