If timing is everything, patience is its unsung understudy. Two decades after U.K. soul singer James Hunter premiered his earthy Sam Cooke-like baritone, the 51-year-old singer James Hunter finally broke through in America with 2006's Grammy-nominated People Gonna Talk. His smoky vocals sound vintage, but the garage-funk backing can get surprisingly raw, offering a pleasant sprinkle of modern sensibility. With a voice this rich and creamy, Hunter lingers at times on the crooning pop side of the spectrum, but his sure-footed delivery is the real highlight of his new Universal Record debut, Minute By Minute. Hunter now hits his emotional marks without fail. —Chris Parker
