Re: “It’s Time to Stop Laughing Off Poor White Men’s Malignancy—And Their Humanity

In this article I read that "[w]hite men are a huge problem." This is blatantly racist and sexist. It holds an entire group of people responsible for what only some of them have done. It tells me, a white man who supported Clinton and abhors Trump, that I am somehow responsible for the behavior of other people who share superficial characteristics with me. The essence of racism and sexism is to not see individuals.

Yes, yes. I know that for decades the idea has been put about that racism and sexism are not about any and all negative racial and gender generalizations. They have to be, according to these redefinitions, generalizations made by someone from a dominant group. But I have never accepted these redefinitions of the terms "racism" and "sexism" and no one has ever provided a good reason why I should. I think it is just a way to cut off discussion by ruling out some concerns by rigged definition.

If the shock of the Trump election is a wake-up call for liberal intellectuals, that has to go way beyond articles like this one. We liberals, as I have said for those many decades, must stop this delusion that it somehow combats prejudiced judgments about African Americans and women to make prejudiced judgments about white people and men. Racism against whites and sexism against men simply increases the racism and sexism in the world. Please consider, along these lines, the following. Peace out.
