Re: “Orange County races

I too am supporting Clarence Birkhead for Sheriff. I've heard that he's both taken tough stances in the past as a public figure in favor of gay rights, that he stands strong by his statement of opposing "stopping minorities of any ethnicity to determine their status", he has a solid background, and to quote Ruby who runs the OrangePolitics.com blog that IndyWeek links to as a progressive local blog "The surprise for me was that they chose to endorse 28-year incumbent Lindy Pendergrass for Sheriff rather than former Hillsborough Police Chief Clarence Birkhead. There is no doubt that Pendergrass has served us well (for longer than some voters have been alive), but Birkhead seems more in line with Orange County values today."

Re: “National races

While I think both the Indy pick Lewis as well as Cunningham would make fine choices against Burr I am hoping Elaine will win this primary.

As you mention she is the most critical of continued war whereas the Indy mentioned specifically that Lewis supports the surge as the best of bad options.

Also on gay rights issues Elaine is more progressive than Ken or Cal. If you look over their lgbt/civil rights sections on their websites you'll see she has taken more and more specific stances than either of the other 2.

Furthermore, Elaine has polled against Burr the best consistently over the past 6 months in the Public Policy Polling results I have seen as well as other polls that I have seen, and has been gain the most ground on Burr the fastest.

So the way I see it, here is how I rank them:
Viability in the Polls against Burr:
1) Elaine
2) Cal
3) Ken

Most Progressive:
1) Elaine
2) Ken
3) Cal

They aren't so different that any of them is a bad choice against Burr in the fall, but on war and gay rights and viability against Burr it is Elaine who is the strongest choice.
