Jackson Scott, Less Western, Astro Cowboy

When: Sat., May 23, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $10
Jackson Scott’s intent seems to be to disorient. The Asheville-via-Pittsburgh songwriter willfully muddied both 2013’s Melbourne and this year’s Sunshine Redux with circus mirrors and pot smoke. Lo-res acoustic guitars and blown-out drums rattle against helium-pitched vocals, obscured by a lysergic fog of reverb and tape delay. Still, he can’t hide his knack for hooks. His best tunes, like Melbourne’s “Evie” and Sunshine’s “Ripe for Love,” feature hooks that cut through the haze like a sunbeam through a cumulonimbus. Scott’s songs may be dazed, but he’s far from confused. —Patrick Wall
