J. PEDER ZANE: OFF THE BOOKS:ON LITERATURE

AND CULTURE

WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, RALEIGH

QUAIL RIDGE BOOKS & MUSIC—Former News & Observer book review editor J. Peder Zane collects 130 of his columns in Off the Books: On Literature and Culture. Zane's columns examine the place of literature in our society and how the works of great writers, from the classics to their modern descendants, help shape our world and our understanding of ourselves. From post-9/11 America to the gay rights movement, Zane argues for the importance of books from the past for the future. His appearance at Quail Ridge promises the opportunity for rich discussion—and, of course, some recommendations for good summer reads. 7 p.m., free, 3522 Wade Ave., Raleigh, 919-828-1588, www.quailridgebooks.com. —Zack Smith
