J Kutchma & the Five Fifths

When: Thu., Jan. 5, 10 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

Even when it's at the center of Red Collar's raucous post-punk, Jason Kutchma's knack for spinning an affecting story—especially about characters with bad luck and self-doubt—is a focal point. Apart from that band, though, Kutchma's street-preacher conviction and gravelly Springsteen-Waits-Schwarzenbach voice stand tall, with the stories taller still. Kutchma has drafted an ace band with members of the Honored Guests, Maple Stave and Rat Jackson, among others, to turn his pared-down busker-style solo set into a compelling barroom spectacle. With a full-band album on the way, this is definitely an act to watch in the coming months. The free show starts at 10 p.m. —Bryan C. Reed
