Re: “How to wrap your head around the pregnant man

According to psychologists and biologists both, "male" and "female" refer to sex, as in the sexual organs that you have, the sex that you were born. "Man" and "woman" refer to gender, which is defined by social and cultural norms of behavior that a person fits. For example, Bobby is five and has a penis but puts on dresses, loves to play with dolls, and when he is fifteen, he SELF-IDENTIFIES as a young woman. It is all in the self-identification. Transgendered means that you IDENTIFY your gender as the gender that is traditionally associated with the sex opposite of yours. So again, say you have a vagina, as Thomas does, and a uterus. Biologically, you are female. Thomas is a man. With "man" and "woman" penis and vagina don't matter, dress doesn't even matter. All that matters is which gender the person associates with. I enjoy being a woman, therefore I am. Whether I am biologically female doesn't particularly matter. Imagine a woman like Thomas' wife, who no longer has the female reproductive organs. Did she, and all other women who have had full hysterectomies, cease to be women once they had neither set of reproductive organs? Short version: Sex is between the legs and gender is between the ears.
