Iris DeMent, Pieta Brown

When: Fri., Aug. 28, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $30-$58.50
Folk favorite Iris DeMent normally takes her time between albums. She paused 16 years between 1996’s The Way I Should and 2012’s twangy, lauded Sing the Delta. After that drought, though, DeMent quickly turned around the new The Trackless Woods, a decidedly Americana spin on the words of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. The record highlights DeMent’s masterful hold on honky-tonk blues and plaintive pleas to God. The Durham show will be a family affair, as her stepdaughter with husband and fellow singer-songwriter Greg Brown, Pieta Brown, opens. —Karlie Justus Marlowe
