"Whenever we think of Martin Luther King, the things that come to mind are almost automatic," says playwright Ira Knight. "He's this icon, in outer space, that we can't reach or touch." Knight felt it was important to reconnect with the human aspects of the civil rights leader, with "the frailties and concerns that connect us all." This weekend, he directs local actor John Ivey in the world premiere of his new one-person show, an interpretation that deliberately doesn't take us to the mountaintop, but which brings us down to meet the man himself instead. —Byron Woods
