International Screendance Festival

Men who've served time in prison return to Alcatraz Island, where they collaborate with a visionary cinematographer and choreographer on a gritty, poetic testament to the physical facts of incarceration. A New Zealand filmmaker follows dance makers along rooftops and cliffsides, into fields and underwater in their individual searches for the edge. Meanwhile, a French choreographer wakes up, yawns and uses the percussion waiting in his body—in cracking knuckles, joints and vertebrae—to make sarcastic jazz and choreography about the human form.

The International Screendance Festival, a long-running but often overlooked project of the American Dance Festival, has one goal: to present film that makes us look at bodies, dance and the worlds both inhabit in new ways. For a peek at what's coming, check out —Byron Woods
