Comedy, Drama

After Riddick and The Butler, the No. 3 movie at the US box office last week was a Spanish language (English-subtitled) comedy-drama produced, directed, written and starring irresistible Mexican TV superstar Eugenio Derbez. He plays carefree Valentin, enjoying the beaches—and the female tourists—in Acapulco. One day, an American named Julie hands him a baby, asks for cab fare and disappears. He follows her to LA, but she's long gone, and he raises baby Maggy himself (eventually she becomes delightful bilingual moppet Loreto Peralta) in a lovingly eccentric manner; he's an overgrown boy himself. Valentin supports her with a job as a Hollywood stuntman he doubles for "Johnny Depp" in Aztec Man, allowing for lots of movie in-jokes. Melodrama, the true international language, transports the film to its teary conclusion, as the fierce love of a parent for a child resonates across cultures.
