Re: “In a Statement, The Durham Hotel Apologizes to Michael Cho, Says It Does Not Tolerate Discrimination

It is interesting how no mention is made of Dr Cho's race in the "apology" above. This is how racism works--it us about the hat, the clothes, the mistaken identity--not about the race. It's about "unfounded allegations" in the face of decent efforts at communication. Its about the victim taking a simple mistake too personally. Have we learned nothing about how racism operates?

I also have to wonder how much of this is being tolerated because the guy is Asian. Racism against Asian-American seems to get much less traction in the media than discrimination against other groups--African-Americans, Latinos or the LGBT community for example. I applaud the Indy Week for picking this story up and highlighting it. I do wish though that there had been a more thoughtful analysis of the race/power issue though.

One last irony: Andrea Reusing made her name and fortune culturally appropriating Asian cuisine. And here she is acting as an apologist for this egregious behavior--against an Asian American. White privilege continues unabated.
