Indigo Girls

When: Sat., June 29, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $22-40

Since leaving the major-label ranks in 2007, Atlanta's Indigo Girls have shown more willingness to stretch the confines of their folk-rock foundation. Of course, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have always had different touchstones. Part of the duo's charm is the frisson between Saliers' '70s singer-songwriter folk and Ray's ragged, rebellious rock instincts. (Ray found an outlet for that energy on post-millennial solo albums.) While it'd be unfair to paint a 28-year, 13-album career in one stroke, there's no missing the rich harmonies, gentle roots melodies and socially aware politics. They've had their fallow creative moments, but they continually rediscover their driving spirit. Their latest, Beauty Queen Sister, reunites them with producer Peter Collins, who helmed 1994's lush Swamp Ophelia. While not as overtly sumptuous, BQS is rich in subtle, unobtrusive detail that provides an understated grandeur. —Chris Parker
