In the Heights

When: Aug. 8-11 2013
Price: $20
One of the hottest Broadway shows in recent years, this Tony-winning 2008 musical documents the lives of everyday people in the tightly knit, largely Dominican neighborhood of Washington Heights in upper Manhattan. Composer Lin-Manuel Miranda's lyrics, which nimbly set his characters' dreams against the grittier realities of the streets, are a seamless fusion of slam poetry, rap and song set to merengue-and-salsa-inflected hip-hop, rock and soul.

But as anyone who's seen In the Heights knows, the verbal maze of its spoken-word counterpoint is difficult enough on its own—and it only gets harder when you layer choreography and other production elements on top. In short, not your first candidate for a youth theater production. The Master Summer Theatre Arts School, the artistic boot camp that the N.C. Theatre Conservatory hosts each summer to provide professional-grade training to pre-professional students, set its sights on this achievement this year. Tito Hernandez directs. —Byron Woods
