In Orange County it's Medenblik

We endorsed both Orange County School Board Chairwoman Anne Medenblik and parent activist Laura Nicholson in May, and only 67 votes separated the two candidates.

Medenblik finished fourth in the eight-person race for four seats, but her 2,574 votes were just shy of the required 2,636 threshold.

Orange County voters now must return to the polls, and we're backing Medenblik again.

She was the only teacher among the eight original candidates, and classroom experience gives her an important perspective when deciding how to manage increasingly precious school resources. Her degree in business education, four years on the board and a term as chairwoman underscore that point.

We originally supported Nicholson as well (Brenda Stephens won the other seat) because we were impressed by her formation of a K–2 Science Club, an after-school program created at no charge to the district. She also deserves credit for creating the OCS Parent Council, helping to spur greater interaction.

But despite all her enthusiasm, Nicholson still urges visitors to her campaign website to vote for her on May 4. She called for the runoff, and we expect to see more effort than that.

Much of Nicholson's acronym-based platform is dedicated to increasing parent involvement, dubbing it the "No. 1 predictor that determines student success." We hope to see Nicholson continue her involvement and strive to rally more parents to do the same. She has already proven she can meet that aim from the other side of the board table, and she can be even more effective now, no matter the outcome of this election.
