Chapel Hill power rock duo The Dynamite Brothers describe their sound as "where Hound Dog Taylor meets the cosmos." They've been compared to The Immortal Lee County Killers, and will do their darnedest to turn your friendly local hipster rock club into a juke joint. Check out their bluesy, punk funk selves out Wednesday, Aug. 15 at Kings in Raleigh, or Saturday, Aug. 18 at Local 506 in Chapel Hill. Call Kings at 831-1005 and Local 506 at 942-5506 for details.

DiamondDiamondDiamondWhether you're a longtime fan or a Johnny-come-lately who discovered Union Station via their soundtrack work (that's band member Dan Tyminski singing George Clooney's parts in O Brother, Where Art Thou), you'll get a chance to see Alison Krauss (pictured) and Union Station live at two upcoming shows at the Carolina Theatre in Durham on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 15 and 16. The Rounder recording artists have a new album, New Favorite, that'll be in stores Aug. 14, and are featured on the just-released soundtrack to Down From the Mountain, a documentary of a May concert done at Ryman Auditorium. Call 560-3030 for more information.

DiamondDiamondDiamondIt's hard to believe that after umpteen years, Evil Weiner (pictured) is hanging it up. If you're a fan of Bill McCormick's charmingly skewed, totally original pop songs, or have fond memories of EW's legendary Christmas shows, where Bill would don his green elf costume and give out candy (while band member Groves Willer, in a festive red suit, did his rough-and-tumble, unshaven Santa bit), then head down to the Local 506 in Chapel Hill this Friday, Aug. 10 to share the love. Bill, a third-grade teacher in Siler City, is heading to Indiana, where he'll be teaching third and fourth-graders at a private school in Bloomington. He and the band are currently recording a last album at Chris Stamey's, tentatively titled Billy Sugarfix's Lost Gumdrop Kingdom (Billy Sugarfix is Bill's alter ego). No doubt, they'll do something special. It could even include candy. The Weiner will be opening for The Mayflies, so you're in for a fine evening of Chapel Hill sounds. Call 942-5506 for details. --Angie Carlson
