Three visual art exhibits are up-and-coming and not-to-be-missed next week in the Triangle.

Andre Leon Gray's circumventing the pigment opens at Artspace gallery on Friday, May 7 and runs through May 29. The exhibition showcases Gray's mixed media work and, as he says, "explores the pigment fixation of our culture and how it affects one's life, and the perception and treatment of the 'other'." Works in circumventing include an update of Gray's George Bush piece, "The Jig is Up" (hint, Condi and Colin feature quite prominently) and "Profilin (fig 341)" , where Gray seeks to erase outdated ideas of superiority prevalent in the educational system. Opening reception at Artspace's First Friday Gallery Walk, 6-10 p.m. www.artspacenc.org or 821-2787 for details.

On Saturday, May 8 the Orange County Artists Guild hosts their first Spring Art Show, which includes 25 local artists exhibiting and selling their works (and just in time for Mother's Day!). Some of the featured artists include Barbara Higgins, Michelle Johnson, Miriam Sagasti and Marilyn Strother. Catch the show at Chapel Hill High School from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 969-7579 for more information.

Saturday also welcomes an exhibition sponsored by the Contemporary Art Museum, Moore Square: Past, Present and Future, which runs through June 1. The exhibition showcases artwork created by sixth-grade students in the Moore Square Museums Magnet Middle School, and documents the history of Moore Square.

An introduction of the artwork is scheduled at the opening reception on Saturday, May 8 from 1-2:30 p.m., in the Urban Design Center, Alexander Building. www.camnc.org or 836-0088 for more details.
