Impression China: All Star Music, Dance and Opera

When: Sun., May 17, 7:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $30-$50
You used to see these everything-but-the-kitchen-sink cultural exchange events like “Impression China” in the ’90s, when Americans first encountered “multiculturalism.” More pastiche than performance, they packaged bite-size portions of a country’s cultural content into an easily digestible event. “Impression China” is a mish-mosh of music, dance and opera that the Carolina China Council is injecting into Raleigh’s Artsplosure. For your 90 minutes, you’ll see soprano Manhua Gao, mezzo soprano Mucun Guan, tenor Bo Jiang, a song-and-dance troupe called the “Seven Sense Girls,” single-string musician Shaohua Meng and “the ‘Miao’ minority rising star singer A’miao.” Some of this will be awful. Some of it will be OK. And at least one performer should stun. Hey, it’s cheaper than a trip to Beijing. —Chris Vitiello
