ILLUSTRIOUS: SPOTLIGHT ON REGIONAL ILLUSTRATION

FRIDAY, JULY 17, DURHAM

SUNTRUST GALLERY AT THE DURHAM ARTS COUNCIL—If the sprawling CAM Raleigh show The Nothing That Is has whetted your appetite for drawings, then the opening reception of this new exhibit at Durham's SunTrust gallery should be your next destination. Juried by Derek Toomes with Durham Art Guild intern Maddie Garcia-Johnson, Illustrious: Spotlight on Regional Illustration includes 70 works by 28 artists who are putting it all on the line. The offerings range from the whimsical animal drawings of Sarah H. Heinsohn to the sizzling comic book-style illustrations of L Jamal Walton. DAG also has another opening July 17, with a reception for Debbie Crawford's mixed media show, Comin' & Goin', at Room 100 in Golden Belt from 6 to 9 p.m. Illustrious runs through Aug. 1. 57 p.m., free, 120 Morris St., Durham, 919-560-2713, www.durhamartguild.org. —Brian Howe
