Cold and beautiful, director Pawel Pawlikowski's film requires effort on the part of the viewer, but it is rewarding. It's a sort of road movie centered on a young woman, who discovers she is Jewish only weeks before taking her vows as a nun, and her aunt, a bitter, drinking former state prosecutor in the Stalinist era. Each frame is carefully composed, occasionally bordering on still life. Movement such as wafting smoke or cascading fabric becomes fraught with import. The storytelling is austere, forcing you to piece together snatches of dialogue. It isn't easy to find but there's a profound film experience to be enjoyed here.
