I is a Long-Memoried Woman

When: Sun., July 14, 2 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

I is a Long-Memoried Woman. Based on a 1983 book by Guyanese poet Grace Nichols, the 50-minute documentary tells the history of slavery from the viewpoint of Caribbean women. Told griot-style, the film weaves song, monologue and dance to create a form more evocative than narrative. Scenes of abuse on sugar plantations, as well as of rebellion, combine to form a moving tribute to feminine perseverance and power. —Chris Vitiello
