Humble Tripe, My Gay Banjo

When: Wed., Nov. 7, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $5

My Gay Banjo is a Brooklyn duo that does exactly what its name suggests. Playing energetic twee with a solid dose of pickin', the tandem interweaves bright, inspirational lyrics with gleeful snippets from pop hits that are equal parts comedy and social commentary. The group distills this seemingly cutesy formula into a truly moving display of gay pride, their uptempo constructions carrying a confident ease that comes only when people are wholly comfortable with who they are. The outfit's self-titled anthem complements the metaphorical instrument: "You're gutsy. You're sassy. And gay." The same goes for this wonderfully plucky duo. Humble Tripe headlines the 9 p.m. show. —Jordan Lawrence
